Tucked away on otherwise lonely River St., this seemingly innocuous bar is anything but ordinary. Nightly live music cascades off the classically themed decor (including a multitude of masks to stare at and thrones to sit in) as patrons sip from the multitude of excellent beers on tap ($3+). Cozy, playful, and a bit unusual, River Gods is not to be missed. Click on their websiteto view music and special events.

“Sizzling fajitas and frosty margaritas” are the order of the day at this funky, laid-back hangout. It's not the most authentic taco joint, but portions are large and prices are reasonable (fajitas $7-12, large order of tequila wings $10, and chili $3-4). The bar stocks 18 different kinds of tequila—need we say more? Margaritas $4+, pitchers $10+. Best of all, should the José Cuervo bring out your artistic impulses, feel free to doodle on the tables and walls (crayons provided). Entrees $7-13.

For an "insiders" look at how Harvard Square in Cambridge, Massachusetts feels, frolics and feeds itself, Casablanca restaurant and bar is the place to go. Casablanca, which celebrated its 30th anniversary last year, is a casual, neighborhood "joint" that has grown to near-legendary status. Students and their professors, writers and their subjects, musicians and their muses all congregate at 40 Brattle Street. Casablanca offers a relaxed drinking environment with a bit more flair than other restaurants. If the exotic, Moroccan-inspired decor doesn't already remind you of the Academy Award-winning movie, then the gigantic wall mural of Bergman and Bogart probably will. Visit Casablanca and enjoy a glass of merlot with friends at one of the intimate tables. Is it the mildly exotic atmosphere? The enticing Mediterranean cuisine? The chance to tipple at the bar elbow-to-elbow with a nuclear physicist, a poet, or the next Kanye West? Who knows?

The décor may be unusually trippy (gilded walls, blue fairy lights, and even a pair of disembodied mannequin legs), but you don't have to be a surrealist to enjoy this romantic, upscale Somerville eatery's exciting menu of 40 tapas and 9 authentic Spanish entrees. For the uninitiated, tapas, loosely translated as “appetizers,” are savory little dishes to share; count on ordering 2-3 per person. Sample the mushroom-stuffed artichoke hearts ($7.50) or the pato braseado (roast duckling with berry sauce, $7.50). If you'd rather stick to a single dish, paella is always a classic ($24). Don't forget the famous sangria or the impressive Spanish wines and ports. And for dessert, the consistently appearing “monthly special” of strawberries in vanilla sherry butter with ice cream ($7.50) is heavenly. Tapas $4-8.50; entrees $17-24. Arrive early, as Dalí doesn't accept reservations—after 6pm, even Salvador himself would have to wait.
